  • SAMJIN COMPANY ENGLISH CLASS in Second as Local Films Dominate

It was a two-horse race at the box office over the weekend as a new release and a three-week holdover accounted for almost 90% of all business. Admissions ticked up again, this time 15%, to 709,000, while the local market share was a gargantuan 91% as Hollywood continues to delay its major tentpoles due to the pandemic.

CJ Entertainment claimed first place with their latest film Collectors starring LEE Je-hoon. The archeologist caper film welcomed 424,000 viewers (USD 3.59 million) over the weekend and has sold a total of 565,000 tickets (USD 4.7 million) since its Wednesday launch.

After growing over its first two weeks, SAMJIN COMPANY ENGLISH CLASS fell back to earth as it slowed 50% in its third frame. That gave the word-of-mouth hit another 185,000 spectators (USD 1.55 million), raising its total haul to 1.26 million admissions (USD 9.93 million).

Chuseok holiday hit and fellow CJ title Pawn was a very distant third place as it shed two thirds of its audience during its sixth week of release. The film filled 18,000 seats (USD 145,000) over the weekend, with a total of 1.7 million entries (USD 13.02 million) counted to date.

The popular Hollywood romance The Notebook claimed fourth place as it was rereleased, selling 13,000 tickets (USD 123,000), which grew its lifetime total to 628,000 admissions (USD 3.95 million).

Still in the top five after well over two months in theaters was the Christopher NOLAN tentpole Tenet. Down 50%, it welcomed 7,500 viewers (USD 66,000) and is inching closer to a new milestone with 1.98 million admissions (USD 16.28 million) counted to date.

A new local contender will vie for the crown this coming weekend as THE DAY I DIED : UNCLOSED CASE, a crime drama with KIM Hye-soo, is set to open on Thursday. Celine SCIAMMA’s Girlhood is also coming out and is so far drumming a decent amount of sales. Meanwhile, Collectors and SAMJIN COMPANY ENGLISH CLASS are likely to continue drawing significant crowds.
