  • THE ACCIDENTAL DETECTIVE 2 Surprises JURASSIC WORLD
  • by Pierce Conran /  Jun 19, 2018
  • Local Sequel Beats Global Franchise

As last week’s blockbuster cooled significantly, the door was left open for new entries from home and abroad to shake up the charts in mid-June. Hollywood maintained a slight edge at 56% of sales while admissions dipped just over 20% to 1.95 million entries overall.

Topping the charts by a razor-thin margin in its opening weekend was local sequel The Accidental Detective 2: In Action. With 687,000 viewers (USD 5.56 million), the investigative comedy-thriller with KWON Sang-woo and SUNG Dong-il fell shy of its predecessor, which ultimately carved out a 2.63 million admissions haul during the Chuseok holiday period in 2015. Since its debut on Election Day, The Accidental Detective 2: In Action has brought in a respectable 1.03 million spectators (USD 8.22 million).

Ebbing 63%, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom came just shy of a repeat on the top of the charts with 667,000 entries (USD 5.51 million) recorded over the frame. To date, the dino-blockbuster has brought in 4.75 million admissions (USD 38.23 million) and will come close to Jurassic World’s lifetime total in the market, which stands at 5.55 million viewers.

Lacking the visibility in Korea that the franchise has elsewhere, Ocean’s 8 had a middling debut in third place with 355,000 tickets (USD 2.96 million) shifted over the weekend with a total 623,000 seats (USD 5.08 million) filled since its Wednesday launch.

After shedding a large number of theaters to make way for new titles, LEE Hae-young’s Believer was down just over two thirds as it pulled in 127,000 viewers (USD 1.05 million) in its fourth weekend. To date, the Korean Drug War remake has amassed a terrific 4.83 million entries (USD 37.64 million).

Down 60% and one spot was US comedy I Feel Pretty, which added 27,000 spectators (USD 228,000) in its sophomore weekend for 180,000 admissions (USD 1.45 million) banked to date.

Looking to make a surprisingly strong debut this week is the high school drama Student A, distributed by Lotte Entertainment. The film is currently topping the reservations chart and is far ahead of several other new openers, which include Wed Anderson’s Isle of Dogs.
