  • DUNKIRK Lands in First in Korea
  • by Pierce Conran /  Jul 25, 2017
  • SPIDER-MAN Hangs in Second

A week before the summer high season kicks off in Korea it was once again a foreign film that took the top spot, though this time an original property for a change, as business crept up 10% week-on-week to reach 2.51 million admissions. Meanwhile, with no major new offerings for a few weeks, the local market share was down to an abysmal 2%.

Christopher Nolan is a household name in Korea and his box office status remains intact with his WWII epic Dunkirk, which opened with 1.12 million viewers (USD 8.79 million) over the weekend and 1.35 million admissions (USD 10.44 million) since its Thursday bow. It may not be one of the best openings of the year but only Nolan could have scored a hit with a British-centric film in a genre that has traditionally floundered in Korea. Nolan’s Korean hits include Interstellar (10.3 million viewers), The Dark Knight Rises (6.4 million viewers) and Inception (5.83 million viewers).

Down 63% in its third session was Spider-Man: Homecoming which swung in with another 534,000 spectators (USD 3.99 million) and has recorded an impressive 6.85 million entries (USD 50.24 million) to date. In third place, shark attack thriller 47 Meters Down took a solid bite out of the box office with 302,000 ticket sales (USD 2.26 million) over the frame and has filled 440,000 seats (USD 3.19 million) in five days.

The rest of the top five was occupied by children’s fare, with the new Crayon Shinchan from Japan (Invasion!! Alien Shiriri) taking fourth with 128,000 entries (USD 870,000) and 138,000 spectators (USD 933,000) since Thursday. Pixar’s Cars 3 parked another 107,000 viewers (USD 727,000) in its second lap, bringing its total to a lackluster 432,000 admissions (USD 2.88 million).

This weekend all eyes will be on RYOO Seung-wan’s WWII escape drama The Battleship Island, which comes with a huge budget and cast and is poised for an enormous opening.
