  • SPIDER-MAN Webs Up Competition in Week 2
  • by Pierce Conran /  Jul 18, 2017
  • CARS 3 Drives into Distant 2nd Place

Ticket sales slowed over the weekend as no major releases were able to upset last week’s chart topper. Admissions came in at 2.26 million with Hollywood swallowing up 85% of the total.

Down 45% after one of the biggest openings in history at the Korean box office, Spider-man: Homecoming snagged another 1.42 million viewers (USD 10.51 million) to bring its total to a stellar 5.9 million spectators (USD 42.9 million) after 12 days in theaters. Competition is about to get very fierce but the film should pass a couple more milestones before ending its run.

Cars 3, the latest from toonhouse Pixar, had a tepid opening with just 267,000 sales (USD 1.78 million) over the weekend and 288,000 entries (USD 1.91 million) during its first four days. The upcoming school holidays may help the film going forward but after such a slow start it may be too little too late.

Local period drama Anarchist from Colony was down just 37% in its third weekend, adding another 206,000 admissions (USD 1.46 million) bringing its total to a sturdy 2.21 million sales (USD 15.09 million).

Opening in fourth was Rob Reiner’s new drama Flipped with 103,000 viewers (USD 768,000) over the frame and 135,000 entries (USD 976,000) since Wednesday.

Closing out the top five was the Irish-Canadian drama Maudie with 57,000 spectators (USD 415,000) as it debuted in the theaters, and 86,000 (USD 603,000) over its first five days.

Ahead of Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk start this week, his 2008 hit The Dark Knight was rereleased and filled 41,000 seats (USD 313,000) coming in sixth and raising its lifetime total to 4.15 million viewers.
