  • MOANA Opens 2nd as Animations Rule

With a variety of new films and holdovers in the marketplace, Hollywood squeezed out its first majority share of 2017 with 52% of ticket sales, while Japan came in second with 31%. Korea trailed far behind with 14% but will jump right back to first this coming week. 2.43 million tickets were sold over the weekend.

Remaining in first after a slight 12% drop was the Japanese anime phenomenon Your Name. Drawing in another 740,000 viewers (USD 5.24 million), the film has welcomed a stellar 2.49 million viewers (USD 17.17 million) so far and appears set to eclipse Howl’s Moving Castle (2004) as the most successful Japanese film of all time in Korea before the end of the month.

Another animation opened in second place as Disney’s Moana debuted with a firm 583,000 entries (USD 4.04 million) over the weekend and 673,000 admissions (USD 4.59 million) in four days. Just like Your Name, Moana is scoring well with viewers and should continue to draw in crowds over the coming weeks.

In its fourth week, local hit Master saw its take halved to 284,000 viewers (USD 2.08 million), which gives it 7.03 million spectators (USD 48.48 million) in total. With new local thrillers opening on Wednesday, Master will likely lose most of its screens in the coming days.

The WWII drama Allied with Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard had a so-so start with 247,000 entries (USD 1.81 million) and 338,000 admissions (USD 2.39 million) since its Wednesday bow. Even less impressive in its opening was video game adaptation Assassin’s Creed, which began its run with 202,000 viewers (USD 1.46 million) in fifth place, and 305,000 spectators (USD 2.13 million) over its first five days.

With the local Lunar New Year holiday on the horizon, Korean studios Next Entertainment World and CJ Entertainment are launching the first domestic tentpoles of 2017 on Wednesday, with the North Korea comedy-action Confidential Assignment and the corruption drama-thriller The King.
