  • TRAIN TO BUSAN Crashes into Record Books
  • by Pierce Conran /  Jul 27, 2016
  • 5.3 Million Viewers after Opening Weekend

Following its bow at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, YEON Sang-ho’s live action feature debut TRAIN TO BUSAN smashed into the Korean box office, laying waste to the opening day record, when it sold 872,232 tickets, almost 200,000 sales ahead of previous record-holder Roaring Currents (2014). Overall, the film pushed business up to 4.36 million this past weekend, with local titles accounting for 76% of the total.

TRAIN TO BUSAN lost no momentum after its thunderous start and welcomed 3.21 million viewers (USD 24.06 million) over its opening weekend, despite significant previews the previous weekend. The figure was just shy of Roaring Currents’ 3.36 million spectator record. To date, the zombie thriller has attracted a stellar 5.31 million viewers (USD 38.56 million) and is well on its way to joining the vaunted 10 million viewer club, particulate considering its strong critic and audience scores.

Losing 58% of its audience over its sophomore weekend, Now You See Me 2 added another 456,522 spectators (USD 3.78 million). To date, the con artist thriller has brought in an impressive 2.72 million admissions (USD 19.51 million). Another milestone seems certain but the film should quickly drop off after that.

Unable to capitalize on the school holidays, animated franchise title Ice Age: Collision Course opened with a tepid 206,288 viewers (USD 1.42 million) and 242,742 admissions (USD 1.66 million) in five days. Meanwhile, Finding Dory dipped 68% to 163,644 viewers (USD 1.15 million) but has now hoisted itself over the two million admissions mark (USD 14.48 million). Another animated title vied for younger viewers in fifth place. Japanese anime Yôkai Watch: the Movie 2 opened with 119,336 viewers (USD 814,064) and 138,404 admissions (USD 936,713) since Wednesday.

TRAIN TO BUSAN should continue to pull in strong numbers but now all eyes will be on Korean War pic Operation Chromite, which features Liam Neeson, to see whether or not it can unseat the juggernaut.
