  • KIM Hye-soo Scores First Place Opening with FAMILYHOOD

  • LEGEND OF TARZAN and THE HUNT Post Mid-Level Debuts
     

    Propelled by two new local openings, Korean films took back the advantage, scooping up 53% of sales over the weekend. Business was up marginally week-on-week, reaching 2.14 million admissions.

     

    Showbox’s comedy Familyhood had a strong debut, opening in first place with 652,894 viewers (USD 4.83 million) over the weekend and 908,949 admissions (USD 6.36 million) over its first five days. Bolstered by the popularity of leading actress KIM Hye-soo, Familyhood provided something new for viewers following scores of dark local thrillers that have been present on the charts in the last few months.

     
     

    Opening with 405,824 spectators (USD 3.15 million) and 552,175 admissions (USD 4.07 million) since Wednesday, The Legend of Tarzan swung into second place with a respectable opening. Audiences seem to have taken to the film, but with the opening of Finding Dory it is unlikely to stay long on the charts.

     

    Also in its first week was new local thriller The Hunt. Staring AHN Sung-ki and CHO Jin-woong, the film powered to a strong opening day but quickly tapered off, the result of poor word of mouth. The film landed in third with 298,815 viewers (USD 2.19 million) and 533,577 admissions (USD 3.51 million) in five days.

     

    Crashing 73% after its middling debut was Independence Day: Resurgence which added 190,041 moviegoers (USD 1.44 million) to bring its ticket haul to 1.39 million (USD 10.33 million). Just behind was The Jungle Book, which saw its audience sliced in half in its fourth week as it accumulated another 179,335 tickets (USD 1.29 million), giving it a new total of 2.48 million admissions (USD 18.23 million).

     

    Pixar’s Finding Dory, already angling to become the most successful animated film of all time in the United States, is poised to handily take over first place this coming weekend, while local period title Seondal: The Man who Sells the River and holdover Familyhood should drum up decent business right behind it.
