  • ZOOTOPIA Steals B.O. Crown in Week 4
  • by Pierce Conran /  Mar 15, 2016
  • LONDON HAS FALLEN Opens in 3rd

Disney’s hit animation Zootopia sneaked up to claim the top spot for the first time this past weekend, during its fourth week on release. With new releases struggling to find viewers, total admissions fell to 1.65 million while Hollywood took the lion’s share of the market at 59%.

Rising 16% after nearly a month on release, Zootopia jumped two spots to first with 342,915 viewers (USD 2.37 million) over the weekend. Strong word of mouth has pushed the film to a robust 2.34 million admissions (USD 15.17 million) to date.

Losing about half of its audience in week three, comfort women drama Spirits' Homecoming let go of the top spot, adding 286,721 spectators (USD 1.91 million) to its stellar 3.14 million admissions (USD 20.14 million) haul.

A week after Gods of Egypt opened in second place, Gerald Butler is back with new release London Has Fallen, which debuted in third with a soft 273,545 tickets (USD 1.91 million) over the frame and 310,752 viewers (USD 2.15 million) since its Thursday start. Meanwhile, Gods of Egypt fell to fifth, slowing 64% for 159,406 viewers (USD 1.12 million) and 788,386 admissions (USD 5.53 million) overall.

Unimpressive in its opening bow was SHIM Eun-kyoung’s first lead role in a thriller, as Next Entertainment World’s Missing You mustered only 257,524 spectators (USD 1.85 million) in fourth place and 303,143 admissions (USD 2.14 million) in four days.

Top of the diversity chart was Hong Kong martial arts title Ip Man 3, which opened with 24,594 viewers (USD 178,103) over four days at ninth on the chart.

New releases this coming week are on the light side, with only the Robert De Niro/Zac Efron comedy vehicle Dirty Grandpa charting in the top ten on the reservations chart. Top of the list is next week’s blockbuster Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice, which is poised to do big business in Korea.
