  • Weekend Box Office Recap: SAN ANDREAS Wins Quiet Weekend
  • by Sonia KIL /  Jun 15, 2015
  • San Andreas Debuts Strong while Local Films Underperform

Hollywood disaster flick San Andreas debuted at the top of the chart and was the only strong box office performer over the weak weekend. The Warner Bros. release earned $7.18 million between Wednesday and Sunday, marking actor Dwayne Johnson’s best ever opening in Korea. It surpassed the opening weekend score of Fast & Furious 7. Second placed, Mad Max: Fury Road earned $2.07 million between Friday and Sunday with a week-on-week decline of 53.8%. The action film has amassed $26.4 million after four weekends. Taking week-on-week drop of 45.4%, Hollywood comedy Spy earned $1.84 million over three days, expanding its total to $14.1 million since 21 May.

Local films showed weak performance over the weekend.
Yoon Jae-gu's crime drama Perfect Proposal opened in fourth place, amassing $679,000 between Thursday and Sunday. Representing a huge week-on-week plummet of 80%, Cannes crime drama The Shameless earned $267,500 from 35,200 admissions between Friday and Sunday, extending its total to $2.63 million from 374,500 admissions. The Jeon Do-yeon starring noir film will be in competition at next week’s Shanghai International Film festival.

Fresh from Japan, horror film Fatal Frame opened eighth-placed, earning $193,000 from 28,200 admissions between Thursday and Sunday.

Partly influenced by the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) concern, total weekend box office admissions took a week-on-week drop of 21.5%, from 1.97 million last weekend to 1.55 million this weekend.
The outbreak of MERS made local distributors extra cautious; promotion events and vip screenings planned for Assassination, My Friendly Villains, and Northern Limit Line have been cancelled and/or postponed.
