  • Olivier Nakache’s Newest Film in Theaters

Olivier Nakache, the director of Untouchable (2011) who drew 1.7 million audiences for the film, is back with Samba which is off to a good start with taking the first place for the fourth week of February in the diversity chart. Just in one week, the film gathered 30,000 theatergoers. It opened on the 18th, the first day of the Lunar New Year Holiday, and the film was sought by family audiences as a healing movie. In Samba, following Untouchable, two individuals with very different backgrounds become friends. The optimistic but illegal immigrant Samba was played by Omar Sy while Charlotte Gainsbourg became Alice who is a talented but burnt out headhunter. With the popularity of Attila Marcel last year, many wonder if this French title will continue a steady performance in the diversity box office. Cumulative ticket sales are standing at 30,756.

At the 87th Academy Awards held on the 22nd, Ida won the best foreign language film category and has started to gain attention. With ticket sales standing at 5,540 and fourth place in the diversity chart, the picture is doing well relative to the number of screens. As for Foxcatcher which was nominated in five categories at the awards, went down threefold in the chart and is now standing at 6th place. Its cumulative ticket sales are at 22,778. The two films’ participation at the awards will likely have an impact to their ticket sales.
