  • IM Kwon-taek, BONG Joon-ho, SONG Kang-ho, CHOI Min-sik and KIM Sang-jin became new members of AMPAS

Five Korean film professionals became eligible to vote in the Oscars, as the Academy added new members. The new addition marks a first for the country’s film professionals to become a part of the LA-based organization.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences invited Korean directors IM Kwon-taek, BONG Joon-ho, actors SONG Kang-ho, CHOI Min-shik and animator Kim sang-jin as a part of the group of 322 new members.
The invitation was conducted in an attempt to increase the diversity of its members.
“It’s gratifying to acknowledge the extraordinary range of talent in our industry,” said Cheryl Boone Isaacs, president of the AMPAS, in a press release.
“This year, our branches have recognized a more diverse and inclusive list of filmmakers and artists than ever before, and we look forward to adding their creativity, ideas and experience to our organization.”
The Academy membership is by invitation only and requires sponsorship by two existing Academy Award members as well as the approval of the Academy’s board of governors.

The new Korean members have constantly contributed to the development of the Korean film industry in their own field of expertise. Filmmaker IM is known for making some 102 films spanning diverse themes and genres; BONG is one of the biggest names that has globally represented Korea with hit films Memories of Murder and Snowpiercer. both of which star actor SONG Kang-ho, another new member to the AMPAS. CHOI Min-shik, best known for his role in Old boy, recently starred in French auteur Luc Besson’s sci-fi blockbuster Lucy. KIM, Disney’s character design supervisor was involved in the 2015 animated feature Big Hero.
