  • Korean Stars Attend Yearly Celebration of Asian Cinema

On Wednesday March 25th, the 9th Asian Film Awards (AFA) were held at The Venetian Macau. Bustling with filmmakers and stars dressed up for the red carpet, the event drew many fans that flocked to the venue. Prior to the event, sixteen Korean film industry professionals were nominated in the event's fourteen categories, confirming its strong presence in the Asian film industry.

Several Korean nominees stepped up to the plate to announce the winners of the awards. HAN Ye-ri of Haemoo walked to the microphone with CHO Jin-woong of A Hard Day. The two actors were nominated for Best Supporting Actress and Best Supporting Actor respectively. The couple presented the Best Production Designer award, which went to LIU Qing.

Korean k-pop sensation Infinite also joined the event by presenting the Best Visual Effects category to Rick Sanders of Gone with the Bullets. They performed two of their songs during a break between the awards, heating up the atmosphere.

BAE Doo-na of A Girl at My Door presented the Best Newcomer Award, which went to Coming Home’s ZHANG Huiwen. BAE took home her own prize when she triumphed in the Best Actress category. She had a surprised look on her face as she walked up to the stage and expressed her thanks.

Two special awards were given by the AFA. One was for Excellence in Asian Cinema, which went to the Japanese actress, NAKATANI Miki. As for the Lifetime Achievement Award, Korean auteur IM Kwon-taek, known as the ‘Korean Godfather’, was given the honor. Presented by the Busan International Film Festival’s LEE Yong-kwan, who introduced IM as “The symbol of all Korean filmmakers,” IM gracefully received the trophy with a humble speech. Many rose from their seats in respect and recognition to the director who has made over a hundred films and changed the Korean film history.

Other Korean attendees at the awards included DOH Kyung-soo of Cart who was nominated for the Best Newcomer Award and JK YOUN, director of Ode to My Father to name a few.
