  • THE THIEVES shoot down another box office record
  • by KIM Hyun-min /  Sep 04, 2012
  • Caper flick becomes the 2nd most attended Korean film in history

Box office records continue to fall in Korea. As of 4pm on August 30th, CHOI Dong-hoon's The Thieves became the second biggest grossing Korean film in history, surpassing The King and the Clown. Around the same time, KIM Joo-ho's The Grand Heist also overtook Deranged and All About My Wife to become this year's third most attended Korean film.

The Thieves broke the 12 million admissions mark 33 days after its release. Through the 30th of August it drew 12,326,147 admissions, overtaking The King and the Clown's 12,302,831 total admissions. The Host, which took 13,019,740 admissions, is still sitting in the top spot. The Thieves broke the 12.3 million mark 37 days after its release, one day earlier than The Host and 23 days sooner than Avatar, which holds the all time box office record in Korea.

Meanwhile, The Grand Heist, which broke the 4 million mark 19 days after its release, is heating up the alte summer box office. As of the 2nd of September, which concluded the fourth weekend since its release date, it's brought in 4,613,929 viewers, making it the fourth most attended Korean film so far this year.

The film has surpassed the totals of Deranged (4.51 million) and All About My Wife (4.59 million), two big first half blockbusters, and arrived at its current total 11 days earlier than Nameless Gangster: Rules of the Time, 2012's second most popular Korean film. This pace is also a week faster than last year's DETECTIVE K : Secret of Virtuous Widow (4.78 million), another historical genre film. The Grand Heist is currently in its 5th week of release and is being seen by a wide range of viewers, with producers hoping that it will break the 5 million admissions mark soon.
