  • <The Concubine> sold to eight Asian countries
  • Jul 17, 2012

  •
Production company Hwang Ki Sung Films reports that KIM Dae-seung’s recent hit <The Concubine> has been sold to eight foreign territories for distribution: Singapore, Japan, Taiwan, New Zealand, Australia, Malaysia and Brunei.

Shown at May’s Cannes Film Market (Marché du Film), the film garnered interest with its lush cinematography and strong characters. Japanese film company Twin, distributor of Korean films such as <The Front Line>, <Woochi> and <Haunters>, said they expect a very lively response to the film’s release.

A representative from Twin noted, “We’ve been fans of KIM Dae-seung for a long time. We’re really happy to be distributing a polished piece of work like <The Concubine>; it’s the kind of film Japanese audiences will show interest in and enjoy.”

<The Concubine> is the fifth feature from veteran KIM Dae-seung, who also directed <Bungee Jumping of Their Own> (2001) and <Blood Rain> (2004). The film is an erotic period drama that traces a love triangle involving a Joseon-era king, his concubine and another man. It has sold more than 2.6 million tickets since opening on June 6, making it the tenth most watched film of 2012 thus far.
