  • A DISTANT PLACE and BLACK LIGHT to Compete in Tallin
  • by Pierce Conran /  Nov 17, 2020
  • Animated Shorts on Show at Estonia’s Black Nights Film Festival

Two Korean features and a pair of shorts have been invited to screen at the 24th edition of the prestigious Black Nights Tallinn International Film Festival (POFF). PARK Kun-young’s A Distant Place and BAE Jong-dae’s Black Light will compete in separate sections while the animated films Tiger and Ox from KIM Seung-hee and KIM Kang-min’s KKUM are also in the program for the event, which is taking place from November 13 to 29 in Estonia.

Invited to the ‘First Feature Competition’, Black Light is the debut of the BAE Jong-dae. The indie drama had its world premiere at the Jeonju International Film Festival in May, where it earned the Best Acting Prize.

PARK Kun-young’s A Distant Place, a Jeonju Cinema Project that also debuted at this year’s Jeonju International Film Festival, has been selected for the ‘Official Competition’. The film is PARK’s sophomore work, following To My River (2019), which was well-received and widely screened at domestic festivals, but little seen overseas.

KIM Seung-hee’s Tiger and Ox is part of the ‘Animated Realities’ showcase. The film has already received several awards on the festival circuit, including the Grand Jury Prize – Animation from the AFI Fest.

Screening in the Shorts Animation Competition, KKUM is the latest work by renowned animation filmmaker KIM Kang-min, who is known for his award-winning and Vimeo Staff Pick selected short Deer Flower (2016). KKUM recently picked up the Nelvana Grand Prize for Independent Short at the Ottawa International Animation Film Festival.
