  • I CAN SPEAK Receives Amnesty International Award
  • by Christopher Weatherspoon /  Dec 07, 2017
  • Comfort-Woman Drama Chosen for Humanitarian Message

NA Moon-hee, only had to wait 56 years to win her first Blue Dragon Film Award for lead actress, but she may already want to look into buying a bigger trophy case. On November 28, it was announced that director KIM Hyun-suk's Chuseok sleeper hit, comfort-woman drama I Can Speak (2017) had been chosen to receive a special award from Amnesty International along with Na, the film’s lead actress. A committee of eight judges selected the winner and it was reported that this year’s vote was unanimous.

The Amnesty International Prize is awarded to programs that contributed to the development of human rights. The award is given at a ceremony each year on December 10, which is World Human Rights Day. Popular Korean variety show Infinite Challenge took home the award in 2015 for devoting an episode to the atrocities that took place on Hashima, the island that serves as the setting for RYOO Seung-wan’s latest release The Battleship Island (2017).

I Can Speak stars LEE Je-hoon as a diligent civil servant who finds himself overwhelmed by complaints from a grumpy, elderly woman (NA Moon-hee). When the woman discovers the young man can speak English almost fluently, she enlists his help for lessons, for a very special, personal reason.

I Can Speak has been a hit both critically and commercially. The film welcomed more than 3 million viewers during its theatrical run, and KIM was chosen as Best Director at this year’s Blue Dragon Film Awards.
