Lotte and Samsung Introduce Super S
Lotte Cinema, the second largest exhibitor in South Korea, has laid claim to the world’s first High Dynamic Range (HDR) LED cinema screen, after revealing a new projector-less 4K screen in its Lotte World Tower location earlier this month.
Using Samsung LED technology, the screen features 96 LED units stretch out to a 10.3 meter width and 5.4 meter height. Dubbed the ‘Super S’, the screen has a peak projection of 146 FL, the equivalent of ten times a normal projection lamp.
Unveiled on July 13th, the screen debuted with showings of Spider-Man: Homecoming and Cars 3 the following day. Wonchun CHA, Lotte Cinema CEO, calls the new theater a “new paradigm of movie screening.” Super S also provides a state-of-the-art sound system marketed as ‘true-to-life’, a collaboration between HARMAN Professional Solutions and Samsung Audio Lab.
“Through sharper and more realistic colors, complementary audio and an elevated presentation, our Cinema LED Screen makes viewers feel as if they are part of the picture,” said HS KIM, President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics.
Beyond typical film screenings, Lotte Cinema, in collaboration with Samsung Electronics, is seeking other ways to make use of the technology. Since the LED screen can operate in a range of ambient brightness levels, the companies will try to accommodate shows for children or those that incorporate a dining experience as well as live broadcasts of sporting, gaming and music events.
