The 16th edition of Mise-en-scène Short Film Festival (MSFF) unveiled its finalists for the Competition section. The festival said that it received 1,163 entries, the largest number ever, from March 1st to 14th. On May 8th, MSFF announced it selected 70 finalists through a judging process for about a month. The number of finalists is seven films more than that of last year, while it recorded 16:1 of the competition rate. 

Finalists for six Competition sections will be reviewed through the festival. This year, 70 short films were selected: 17 shorts with societal perspective, 14 melodramas, 14 comedies, 13 horrors/fantasies and 12 actions/thrillers. There is no selection in the mixed genres category, so five best pictures will be chosen in the rest of each category. The Grand Prize will be decided as one of the award-winning films by all judges’ unanimous agreement. However, MSFF hasn’t produced any Grand Prize winner for four years since director UM Tae-hwa’s Forest (2012), so this year’s result has been getting attention. 

Besides, films which won the Special Jury Award and I♥SHORTS! Audience Award will be screened at the closing ceremony. Meanwhile, MSFF is supported by the Korea Film Director’s Network and Amore Pacific’s Mise-en-scène and is held every June or July in Seoul. The details of the festival have not yet been announced.
