  • Contents Panda Brings Ghosts, Spies and Assassins to Cannes
  • by Pierce Conran /  May 22, 2017
  • THE MIMIC and STEEL RAIN Go on Sale Alongside THE VILLAINESS

Contents Panda, which presented YEON Sang-ho’s TRAIN TO BUSAN in Cannes last year, is back on Croisette with a film in the Midnight Screenings section and a trove of new titles for sale in the market. In addition to JUNG Byung-gil’s Cannes action title The Villainess, the Korean distributor is introducing the mystery-horror The Mimic, the spy-action film Steel Rain, the comedy-drama The Bros and the crime-thriller Aridong (WT), among others.

The Villainess features KIM Ok-vin of PARK Chan-wook’s Thirst (2009) as a trained assassin seeking to exact revenge on the men who killed her husband. Director JUNG previously made the thriller Confession of Murder (2012). The film will be released in Korea in June.

From Hide and Seek (2013) director HUH Jung, The Mimic, which is scheduled for release in late summer, stars YUM Jung-ah of KIM Jee-woon’s A Tale of Two Sisters (2003) as a woman whose son is missing and who takes in a young girl she finds near a mysterious mountain.

Contents Panda’s major end of year title is Steel Rain, a big-budget tale of a North Korean agent who cooperates with an agent from the South to prevent a war. Featuring JUNG Woo-sung (Cold Eyes, 2013) and KWAK Do-won (THE WAILING), the film is the sophomore work of The Attorney (2013) director YANG Woo-suk.

Other titles in their lineup include the buddy comedy The Bros, from Finding Mr. Destiny (2010) director CHANG You-jeong, with Don LEE (TRAIN TO BUSAN) and LEE Dong-hwi (Confidential Assignment) as brothers who get involved in a hit-and-run accident after a family funeral, and KIM Hong-sun’s third film Aridong (WT), following Traffickers (2012) and The Con Artists (2014), which features BAEK Yoon-sik (Save the Green Planet, 2003) as a grumpy landlord who begins to help an investigator solve a case of serial murders.

In addition, Contents Panda is also presenting the documentary The Reservoir Game from CHOI Jin-sung and LEE Jae-han’s animation The Beetles.
