JANG Woo-jin Indie Joins MoMA’s New Directors/New Films Lineup
Following its debut at the
Busan International Film Festival last year and its recent invitation to the recently concluded 67th Berlin International Film Festival,
JANG Woo-jin’s sophomore indie drama
Autumn, Autumn will have its North American debut next month during the 46th season of the New Directors/New Films series, presented jointly by the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the Film Society of Lincoln Center in New York.
Split into two segments, Autumn, Autumn features a young man returning to his hometown of Chuncheon by train after taking an interview in Seoul. On the train he crosses paths with a middle-aged couple visiting Chuncheon to revisit old memories. The Korean title of the film is Chuncheon, Chuncheon.
In Busan, where it screened in the Korean Cinema Today: Vision section,
Autumn, Autumn picked up the Director’s Award. At the end of last year, JANG’s film screened at the
Seoul Independent Film Festival.
The New Directors/New Films program writes of the film: “With funny and moving scenes that play out in understated yet bravura long takes, Autumn, Autumn is as attuned to the passage of time and fluctuations of light as it is to everyday human drama.”
JANG’s work follows his acclaimed debut
A Fresh Start (2014), which premiered in Competition at the
Jeonju International Film Festival, where it earned the Grand Prize in the Korean Competition. The film went on to screen at the Locarno International Film Festival as well as the Shanghai International Film Festival.
