  • Five Korean Indies to Screen in Rotterdam
  • by Pierce Conran /  Jan 25, 2016
  • IFFR Takes Busan Trio and latest from HONG sang-soo, Jogko ANWAR

Five independent Korean films, three of which had their world premieres at the 20th Busan International Film Festival last October (though all five screened there), are set to have bows as part of the lineup of the 45th International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR), which will take place from January 27th to February 7th.

Hailing from BIFF’s signature ‘New Currents’ competition, Night and Fog In Zona is a four-hour documentary from JUNG Sung-il about celebrated Chinese documentary filmmaker WANG Bing (Tie Xi Qu: West of the Tracks, 2003) which delves into the question ‘what is film?’ JUNG, a major Korean film critic, previously made Cafe Noir, which debuted at Venice in 2009. The film will feature in IFFR’s ‘Regained’ lineup, a section which draws upon cinematic memories.

Also from ‘New Currents’ is LEE Seung-won’s debut Communication & Lies, which picked up the NETPAC and Actress of the Year Awards at BIFF. The black and white film follows a man and woman who delve into a psychosexual relationship. LEE’s film will screen in ‘Bright Futures’, along with PARK Hong-min’s sophomore effort ALONE (following his 2013 debut A Fish). PARK’s film, which won the Citizen Reviewers’ Award and Actor of the Year Prize in Busan, features a man who witnesses a murder in a neighborhood and falls in and out of dreams as he tries to escape. JUNG and PARK’s debut films also screened in Busan. All three titles are represented internationally by M-Line Distribution.

HONG Sang-soo’s Right Now, Wrong Then, the recipient of the Golden Leopard from the Locarno International Film Festival last year, continues its festival run in the ‘Critics’ Choice’ program, while A Copy of My Mind, the Indonesian film from Jogko ANWAR which was co-produced by CJ Entertainment, will be featured in the ‘Voices' lineup.
