At the 25th Singapore International Film Festival, the Silver Screen Awards recognized PARK Jung-bum’s Alive by handing him a Special Mention Award. The awards took place on the 13th, and the festival commented that the film was chosen because “Passion and conviction are very much alive in actor-director Park Jung-bum’s ode to human stoicism. Despite a run time of almost three hours, this film carries us along with its craft and dedication”.

 

At this year’s festival, a multitude of Korean films were programmed. The list included works from IM Kwon-taek who received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the festival along with a tribute program. IM’s films include Village in the Mist (1982), Mandara (1981) and his most recent film, Revivre. Other Korean films invited were Director HAN Yun-sun’s 18-Eighteen Noir, LEE Do-yun’s Confession, and KIM Ki-duk’s One on One which went to the Asian Vision section. Alive was the only film in the official competition program and PARK received 1,500 SGD (USD 1,140) for his Special Mention Award.

 

Alive first screened at the 15th Jeonju International Film Festival as part of the Jeonju Digital Project. Following its premiere, the film has been invited to eight domestic and international film festivals, winning the Youth Jury Award from the Locarno International Film Festival, and the Best Actor and Obra Cine Award from Mar Del Plata on November 30th. PARK Jung-bum first came into the spotlight through his The Journals of Musan (2010), in which he also performed double duty as director and actor. Since then, PARK has been recognized in the industry for his diverse talents in both categories.

 

Alive, which carries the peculiar realism director PARK has become known for, tells the story of laborer Jung-cheol, who only wishes to have a house for his family. The film follows his life through various obstacles as he fights on in hope. Alive was most recently invited to the 10th Jeju Film Festival as the opening film.
