According to the Korean Film Council’s integrated ticket sales network, The Pirates drew 951,494 spectators over the weekend, reaching 5.93 million admissions in total. During the week, the film also crossed the six million viewers mark. The film gained momentum while surpassing five million admissions on August 22nd (Fri.) and maintained course to become the number one film by beating Roaring Currents over the weekend. This means that The Pirates dethroned Roaring Currents, which surpassed 16 million admissions, after lagging behind it for two weeks. After opening at second and maintaining its pace, the film was well positioned to catch up with Roaring Currents. The Pirates eclipsed the three other summer blockbusters, Kundo: Age of the Rampant, Roaring Currents, and Haemoo, in terms of seat occupancy rates. On August 23rd (Sat.) and 24th (Sun.), the rate stood at 56.6% and 55.1%, respectively, demonstrating strong audience satisfaction. Moreover, its ticket reservation rate has risen as time has gone by. Normally, the rate falls over time. The film recorded a ticket reservation rate of about 15% during its debut. But the rate jumped to 29% on August 23rd during its third week on release. In particular, from August 22nd to 24th, The Pirates outsold Roaring Currents by 150,000 spectators, although Roaring Currents outnumbered The Pirates by about one thousand screenings. The future of The Pirates seems bright. This is because Haemoo, another blockbuster, is performing poorly and Roaring Currents is showing signs of slowing down after surpassing 16 million admissions. Furthermore, The Pirates is expected to coast at the top of the box office chart since no blockbusters or highly anticipated releases will open before the Chuseok holiday in early September.
