  • KIM Hae-gon debuts as a director
  • by Yi Ch'ang-ho (KOFIC) /  Jul 28, 2006
  • The upcoming drama The Unbearable Lightness of Loving (previously titled as: The Face That I Miss) will mark the directorial debut of actor/screenwriter KIM Hae-gon. The male lead in the film is KIM Seung-woo (Woman on the Beach), while JANG Jin-young (Blue Swallow) will play the female lead character. The story is about a doomed romance between a man who is engaged to a woman he doesn't love - chosen by his mother and a room salon hostess. The film is scheduled for a release in September. KIM Hae-gon is known as one of the most talented persons in the Korean film industry. Among the talents he's recognized for is screenwriting. The screenplay for Failan (2001) starring CHOI Min-shik andCecilia CHEUNG is one of the scripts for which he is particularly praised. The Unbearable Lightness of Loving ranks as another highly praised screenplay of his. It is the first film script written by KIM, back in 1998. Although recognized as a high quality script, KIM had a long battle ahead for turning the story into a film. The scenario was considered very difficult to film, and it was expected that the film would have a hard time finding an audience. However KIM Hae-gon has finally succeeded in making the film, which finished shooting a few months ago. The financing remained troublesome right until the end, with a late financial rescue from production company Good Player. KIM Hae-gon started out in theater. He worked as a writer, director and actor. By the age of twenty, he had already won theater awards. He entered the film scene as an actor, playing together with KIM Seung-woo in IM Kwon-taek's (1990). He went on to star in some of Korea's influential films as an actor, including Taegukgi (2004) and A Bittersweet Life (2005). KIM Hae-gon's long time friend and actor KIM Seung-woo is known for his comedy roles, but has also acted in serious dramas, like the upcoming HONG Sang-soo film Woman on the Beach. Well known actress JANG Jin-young, meanwhile, has played in the horror film Sorum, the romantic comedy Singles (2003) and the drama Blue Swallow (2005). Yi Ch'ang-ho (KOFIC)
