  • My Sassy Girl Remake
  • by Yi Ch'ang-ho (KOFIC) /  May 12, 2006
  • There are new developments in the American remake of the Korean comedy My Sassy Girl, as the remake rights have changed hands between two Hollywood studios: from DreamWorks to Gold Circle. Reportedly, Fox Searchlight also expressed an interest in acquiring the remake rights. The new director attached to the project is Yann Samuell (Love Me if You Dare), replacing Gurinder Chadha (Bend it Like Beckham), who was originally lined up to direct the film for DreamWorks. Filming is scheduled to start this fall. My Sassy Girl is a box office hit of 2001 that made JEON Ji-hyun a major film star in Korea and other Asian countries. In the original film, JEON's character is not the average cute girlfriend, but a young woman who writes stories about strong women saving the world, who in the process save their boyfriends too. She bosses around the young man who she is dating after she tragically lost her previous boyfriend. The remake follows the pattern of a man being dominated by a 'sassy' woman. The male protagonist undergoes a transformation from a slacker university student to a man with his life planned out, only to see his life being turned up-side-down when he falls for a reckless woman. Gold Circle is also in the process of acquiring the rights to JEON Ji-hyun's latest film Daisy (2006). Another remake of a film in which JEON starred - Il Mare (2000) is set to be released in June of this year under the title The Lake House with stars Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock.
