  • Duelist to Screen in Japan and France
  • by Nigel D’Sa (KOFIC) /  Mar 27, 2006
  • LEE Myung-se's Duelist starring GANG Dong-won, HA Ji-won and AHN Sung-ki will be shown in Japan and France on about 200 first-run movie screens this spring. The highly choreographed and visually stunning Chosun-period film received wild acclaim at the eighth "Festival du Film Asiatique de Deauville", which wrapped Mar. 13, in France. Duelist, which tells the story of two detectives and an unidentified assassin, received a standing ovation from the 1500 plus audience of filmmakers and industry reps who attended its preview. The film was highly praised for its color-schemes and cinematography, while actress HA Ji-won was lauded by Europeans as a 'Pearl of Asia'. French distribution company, La Fabrique de Films, is preparing the release of the film, to be shown on screens throughout France from May 17th. La Fabrique de Films had previously imported and releases LEE's 1999 feature Nowhere to Hide. In Japan the film will open from April 22nd and is being released by Comstock Ltd., a Japanese film import and distribution agency. Japan bought Duelist for US$5 million last year at the Film Market of the Cannes International Film Festival while the film was still in production. Nigel D'Sa (KOFIC)
