  • Korea launches first film labor union
  • Dec 23, 2005
  • The Federation of Korean Movie Workers' Union, which ranks as the Korean film industry's first-ever labor union, was launched on December 15 with an initial 320 members. The union, made up primarily of assistant directors, lighting and cinematography crew members, will hope to address the instability of employment in the film industry and the lack of a minimum wage, overtime pay, or social security benefits for many workers. Korean film shoots are often known to extend past their original schedule, but many workers are paid on a per-project basis, meaning that they earn no overtime. The union will hope to use its collective influence to push for the introduction of relevent laws to protect workers rights. More information can be found in Korean at the Federation of Korean Movie Workers' Union website: http://www.fkmwu.org
