  • Worldwide documentary network to launch at Busan

The 16th Busan International Film Festival (BIFF)’s Asian Cinema Fund (ACF) will join the World Documentary Exchange (WDE), a documentary network between Europe, the Americas, and henceforth Asia. The expanded network aims to create more opportunities for documentaries around the world.

WDE is originally co-founded by Hot Docs, the largest documentary festival in North America, and one the world’s most prestigious festivals of its kind, the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam. The Asian Network of Documentaries (AND), the documentary network of BIFF’s ACF will newly take part in the Exchange.

The newly organized WDE will create opportunities for documentary filmmakers to internationally promote their films. WDE will run several programs to increase the sales of European, Asian, and North American documentaries. With the cooperation between the three festivals, directors and producers will be able to establish their own social networks as well as enlarge the possibilities for co-producing and co-investing in future documentaries.

WDE plans to hold a variety of programs to invigorate documentary sales at the upcoming BIFF. This includes getting more sales companies that specialize in documentaries to come to the Asian Film Market. This will help European documentary executives to understand the Asian market better and also help find new ways to market Asian documentaries overseas.
WDE will also invite European documentary experts as mentors to share the understanding of and strategies for overseas business. This will also build rapport between Asian cineastes and European documentary experts.

WDE, founded by the support of Media Mundus, is a support program of the Media International of European Visual Industry Promotion Agency and is expected to introduce new documentaries and new customers by constantly discovering and introducing outstanding documentaries from each continent.
The 16th Busan International Film Festival runs Oct. 6 – 14. The Asian Film Market, Asian Project Market and Busan International Film Commission & Industry Showcase (BIFCOM) running Oct. 10 – 13.
