Ko - production in Busan
  • Hong Sang-soo’s next film to star French actress Isabelle Huppert
  • Jul 12, 2011
  • Korean auteur director Hong Sang-soo’s upcoming film will feature the award-winning French actress Isabelle Huppert. Currently in production, the film has yet to be titled or to have a detailed story announced. The prolific director has started shooting up to two films a year and is well-known for his flexible working style when it comes to day-to-day shooting of a story.

Isabelle Huppert had visited Korea in May for publicity on her film Copacabana and to attend a photography exhibit on herself. It was at that time that she told the press  that she was interested in collaborating with Korean directors like Lee Chang-dong, Hong Sang-soo, Im Sang-soo, Kim Ki-duk, Park Chan-wook and Bong Joon-ho. The actress has won multiple prizes from the prestigious Cannes, Venice and Berlin film festivals for films such as Michael Haneke’s The Piano Teacher, Claude Chabrol’s Story of Women and Francois Ozon’s 8 Women.

A regular at the Cannes film festival, Hong Sang-soo has a special affinity with France, where he also shot his Korean-artist-in-Paris film <Night & Day>.

Hong’s new film also stars Yu Jun-sang, who starred in Hong Sang-soo’s <The Day He Arrives>, which was in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard official selection this year. Yu also acted in Hong’s <Hahaha>, which won the Un Certain Regard Jury Prize in 2010, and in <Like You Know It All>, which screened in Cannes’ Directors’ Fortnight in 2009.

Other actors in the film who are returning to work with Hong Sang-soo once again include Moon So-ri and Yoon Yeo-jung who were both in his <Hahaha>, and Jung Yu-mi and Moon Sung-geun, who were both recently in his <Oki’s Movie>.

Hong Sang-soo is currently shooting his most recent project around South Korea in locations such as Tae-an in South Chungcheong Province, Bu-an in North Jeolla Province, and different locations in Gyeonggi Province.

The film is due to be ready for a premiere the second half of the year.
