  • New Covid-19 Cluster Pushes Back INTRUDER and More in June
  • by Pierce Conran /  May 21, 2020
  • Local Release Calendar Aims to Ramp up Next Month

A new cluster of Covid-19 cases in Central Seoul has sparked fears of a second wave of infections. Local distributors have been left with no choice but to delay releases of films that had been scheduled for release in late May.

Among those is the mystery-thriller Intruder, starring SONG Ji-hyo and GIM Mu-yeol, which was set to open on May 21, thus becoming the first release of a major local film since late February. Now the film, which was directed by SOHN Won-pyung and is being distributed by Acemaker Movieworks, is scheduled to bow on June 4.

Also pushing back are KIM Hee-jung’s indie drama A French Woman (2019) with KIM Ho-jung, from May 24 to June 4, and the new drama Innocence, with SHIN Hye-sun, BAE Jong-ok and HUH Joon-ho, which was due to open on May 27 and has now been pushed back to an unspecified point in mid-June.

Newly added to the June release calendar are the mystery-drama ME AND ME, the directing debut of veteran actor JUNG Jin-young, starring CHO Jin-woong, and the period drama Sorikkun (Korean title, ‘sorikkun’ is the title given to Korean traditional singers), the latest film from Spirits’ Homecoming (2016) director CHO Jung-rae.

The last major local release to find its way into theaters was the thriller BEASTS CLAWING AT STRAWS, which opened on February 19 but quickly had its box office prospects cut short amid the first major wave of Covid-19 infections.
