- SPIRITS’ HOMECOMING Director Returns with Pansori Drama
The period pansori drama Sorikkun (Korean title) from Spirits’ Homecoming (2016) director CHO Jung-rae, wrapped production at the end of November, following the start of principal photography back in September. The film stars KIM Min-jun, LEE Yoo-ri and KIM Dong-wan.Taking place during Korea’s Joseon Era, Sorikkun focuses on the lives of traditional pansori singers, a form of musical storytelling generally accompanied with a percussion instrument. The film takes its title from an old Korean word that refers to pansori performers.Character actor KIM Min-jun, of Top Star (2013) and RV: Resurrected Victims (2017), appears in the film, alongside TV actress LEE Yoo-ri, in her first feature film role since the horror film Bunshinsaba, Ouija Board in 2004, and KIM Dong-wan, who featured in Deranged (2012) and One Way Trip (2016). The leading cast also includes musical performer LEE Bong-geun in his first film role.Director CHO, who has harbored the dream of making a pansori film for the last 27 years, previously directed the music-themed drama Duresori : The Voice of the East (2012) and the documentary WONDERS (2015). He hit the big-time with his crowdfunded period comfort women drama Spirits’ Homecoming, which was released in 2016 and became the most successful narrative indie film of all time at the Korean box office with 3.59 million admissions (USD 23.32 million).Sorikkun will be unveiled to audiences at some point in the first half of 2020.
