  • Action Film Becomes Top R-Rated Film Ever in Southeast Asian Market

Lotte Cultureworks (formerly Lotte Entertainment) has achieved a key breakthrough in the Vietnamese market with the successful release of their latest local Vietnamese production Hai Phuong, which has become the most successful R-rated film ever in the Southeast Asian market.

After its February 22 release, the action film had welcomed 1.73 million viewers by its 10th day in theaters, far exceeding its 1.02 million admission breakeven point, making it not only the highest-grossing local R-rated action film of all time but also the third most successful Vietnamese film of all time overall. As of March 8, the film’s dollar grosses have exceeded USD 4.2 million.

Lotte has pointed out that the action film’s success has been particularly notable in a market typically dominated by romantic and comedy fare.

The story follows an ex-gangster single mother, played by Vietnamese star Veronica NGO (aka Ngô Thanh Vân) who tries to save her daughter, who has been kidnapped by a gang. The film combines Hollywood action tropes with the local Vovinam martial art combat style.

Hai Phuong was also released by Well Go USA in North America on March 1 under the title Furie, where it has so far collected USD 156,000 in box office receipts.

Lotte Cultureworks has distributed several of its recent Korean titles in the Vietnamese market, such as the Along with the Gods films and Be With You (2018) and has previously been active with other local productions. Their first local film was Daddy Issues, which grossed USD 2.6 million from around one million admissions when it was released in the market last December.
