  • Berlinale Extends Invites to New Films from ZHANG Lu and LEE Su-jin
  • by Pierce Conran /  Jan 25, 2019
  • FUKUOKA and IDOL Join Forum and Panorama Sections in Berlin

A pair of new Korean films has been added to the completed Forum and Panorama programs of next month’s 69th Berlin International Film Festival. Joining the forum lineup will be Fukuoka, the new film from director ZHANG Lu, while HAN Gong-ju (2014) director LEE Su-jin’s sophomore film Idol (2018) has joined the Panorama section.

Following quickly on the footsteps of his previous film Ode to the Goose (2018), which premiered in a Gala slot at the Busan International Film Festival last October, director ZHANG Lu returns to the Berlinale for the third time with his new work Fukuoka. He was previously in Berlin with Desert Dream (2007) in competition and Dooman River (2011) in the Generation program.

Six years after his sensational debut HAN Gong-ju (2014), which debuted at the Busan International Film Festival and went on to win the top prizes from the Marrakesh, Rotterdam and Fribourg International Film Festivals, director LEE Su-jin will be back on the festival trail with his second film Idol (2018), which stars SUL Kyung-gu and HAN Suk-kyu as fathers who go head to head in a political thriller, and also reunites the director with his HAN Gong-ju (2014) star CHUN Woo-hee.

Fukuoka and Idol (2018) join previously announced Korean titles at the Berlinale, which include KIM Bora’s House of Hummingbird (2018) and KIM Tae-yong’s Kokdu: A Story of Guardian Angels (2018), which are both screening in the Generation section, and IM Kwon-taek’s Mismatched Nose (1983), screening in the Classics program under the title Jjak-ko.
