  • LEAVING LAS VEGAS Filmmaker Developing Korean-Language Project
  • by Pierce Conran /  Dec 12, 2018
  • Mike FIGGIS Will Be 1st Hollywood Director of Korean Film

Mike FIGGIS, the English director most well-known for the film Leaving Las Vegas, which earned Nicholas CAGE the Academy Award for Best Actor in 1995, is currently developing a film that will be set and shot in Korea, featuring Korean language. This would be the first ever Korean film made by a Hollywood filmmaker.

Speaking to a reporter at The Korea Times, the 70-year-old FIGGIS expressed his appreciation of Korean films and dramas, explaining: “After Netflix was introduced in the U.K., it became much easier to access Korean films and especially TV dramas. The more I watched them, the more I became interested in Korean culture, and in their different approach to storytelling.” FIGGIS has been particularly impressed with acting in the Korean entertainment world, citing TV appearances of actresses SON Ye-jin and KIM Hee-ae

The director is working on a thriller about a woman who evades the clutches of the madman who abducted her, but ten years on, memories of her terrible experiences resurface. FIGGIS’ script has been translated into Korean and he is currently contacting local production companies and talent agencies, while eyeing production at some point next year. The project would feature an all-Korean cast.

FIGGIS has been active as a director since Stormy Monday in 1988 and is also known for Infernal Affairs, Mr. Jones, Timecode and more recently Cold Creek Manor.
