  • YEON Sang-ho Moving Forward with TRAIN TO BUSAN Sequel
  • by Pierce Conran /  Aug 27, 2018
  • Featuring New Characters, PENINSULA Aims for Early 2019 Production

Director YEON Sang-ho has announced that he is currently working on a follow-up to his enormously successful 2016 zombie action-drama TRAIN TO BUSAN (2016). Under the working title Peninsula, the sequel is currently being scripted and is aiming for a production start date early in 2019.

YEON has stated that the film will follow the events of TRAIN TO BUSAN. In the original, a virus turning people into zombies broke out around Seoul Station just as a high-speed train left for Busan. The new story will take place as the virus has ravaged the entire country, but it will feature a completely new set of characters. Casting has yet to be fixed but Next Entertainment World (NEW) will return to finance and distribute the new film.

TRAIN TO BUSAN was the top-grossing Korean film of 2016, after raking in 11.57 million admissions (USD 83.27 million). Beyond that, it also became the most successful Korean film to ever screen outside of Korea. Foreign sales outfit CONTENTS PANDA reported its final overseas take as USD 57 million. The film scored several records around the world and was particularly successful in Hong Kong, where it became the most well-attended Asian film of all time.

Director YEON’s most recent outing was the superhero action-drama Psychokinesis, which was released during this year’s Lunar New Year holiday before being presented globally on Netflix.
