  • Sales Company Strikes Sales for Creature Feature MONSTRUM

Korean sales boutique Finecut is on the ground at the Marché du Film in Cannes with a broad lineup of titles, which includes LEE Chang-dong’s highly-anticipated new work BURNING, screening in the official competition of the Cannes Film Festival this year.

Eight years after his last work Poetry, LEE’s BURNING is an adaptation of the MURAKAMI Haruki short story ‘Barn Burning’ and features YOO Ah-in (Veteran, 2015) as an aspiring writer who meets a girl, played by newcomer JUN Jong-seo, and soon after her mysterious new friend Ben, played by Steven YEUN (Okja, 2017), who tells him about his unusual hobby. LEE’s last two films both earned prizes in the Cannes competition: JEON Do-yeon earned Best Actress for Secret Sunshine in 2007, and LEE earned Best Screenplay for Poetry in 2010.

The arthouse pic has so far secured distributors in eight markets, such as France (Diaphana Distribution), China (Blue Share), Hong Kong and Macau (Edko Films), Taiwan (Hualien International) and the Philippines (Viva Communications), as well as Singapore, Malaysia and Brunei (Clover Films).

One of Finecut’s hottest titles in the market this year is their upcoming period creature feature Monstrum. The latest work from Countdown (2011) director HEO Jong-ho, the film features KIM Myung-min (A Day, 2017) as an unsung military official who teams up with his archer daughter (Girl’s Day member LEE Hye-ri) and a band of warriors, including Okja’s CHOI Woo-shik, to fight a man-eating creature during the Joseon Era.

The film has proven a strong seller for Finecut, having already sold North American, British and Irish rights to AMC Networks’ SVOD service Shudder. The film has also been bought by Koch Media (Pay TV rights for Germany, Austria and German-speaking region of Switzerland), Clover Films (Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei and Indonesia), Blue Lantern (Vietnam), Rafaella Films International (Philippines), Moviecloud (Taiwan), Mono Film (Thailand) and Emphasis (worldwide in-flight rights).
