  • by KIM Su-bin /  Apr 09, 2018
  • KOFIC to Have a Booth at the Beijing Film Market during BJIFF

The 8th Beijing International Film Festival (BJIFF), which is taking place this month, has invited five Korean films: RYOO Seung-wan’s The Battleship Island (2017), YEON Sang-ho’s Seoul Station (2016), Hong Sangsoo’s The Day After (2017) and Claire's Camera, and CHO Young-jun’s The Preparation (2017). Except for Claire's Camera, all of them have already been released in Korea. This list may also grow longer in the coming weeks.

Starting on April 15 and running across eight days, this year’s BJIFF will present 579 films from 90 countries. This major film festival was created in 2011 and has since become a forum for cultural exchange between Korea and China, having introduced until 2016 many Korean films and Korea-China co-productions. Among the events slated for 2018 are the Tiantan Awards ceremony, the Beijing Film Panorama, the Theme Forum, the Film Market and the Film Carnival, in addition to the Opening and Closing ceremonies and other relevant activities. WONG Kar-wai, the president of the Tiantan Awards jury, will be joined by American director and producer Rob Cohen, Swedish helmer Ruben Östlund, Romanian director Cãlin Peter Netzer, Chinese actress SHU Qi, Chinese actor DUAN Yihong and Polish composer Jan A. P. Kaczmarek.

This year, BJIFF will present the retrospective sections “Special Collection Chinese Cinema: Reform and Opening-up 40 Years” and “Special Collection Female Power”. In addition, special programs will pay tribute to several acclaimed directors including Ingmar Berman and Wes Anderson. The Korean Film Council (KOFIC) will also have a booth at the film market holding simultaneously with the festival.
