  • Busan Film Commission and AFiS Publish White Paper on Asian Film Industry
  • by Christopher Weatherspoon /  Mar 15, 2018
  • Report Comprised of Information From 17 Countries

The Busan Film Commission (BFC) has published a report on the current status of the movie industry in 17 countries. Titled the ‘2017 AFiS Film Industry White Paper’, the 400-page document is comprised of data collected by the Busan Asian Film School’s (AFiS) International Film Business Academy’s first cohort of students.

The book, which is written in both Korean and English, provides a survey of the film industries of each student’s respective country. The students were tasked with using in-depth research and statistical data to examine things such as the economics of media, local film culture, industry trends and future outlooks on growth. The book’s co-authors hailed from 17 Asian countries, which included South Korea, Bhutan, Brunei, Cambodia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Iran, Kazakhstan, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam.

For countries with emerging film industries, such as Bhutan, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Sri Lanka, the white paper is an opportunity to obtain first-hand insight into markets that may not have had such information easily available in the past. For other, more robust markets, such as Vietnam and Indonesia, the report offers even more in-depth data and research on the development of these markets and their future outlooks for international expansion.

The ‘2017 AFiS Film Industry White Paper’ is the first in what the Busan Film Commission expects to be an ongoing research series. The BFC has already announced that they plan to supplement the data each year.
