  • ALONG WITH THE GODS Crosses 14.3 Million Viewers
  • by Christopher Weatherspoon /  Feb 19, 2018
  • Fantasy Epic Becomes 2nd Most Watched Film in Korea

Another week, another achievement unlocked for Lotte Entertainment’s blockbuster Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds (2017). On January 30, the fantasy epic passed the 14 million-viewer mark, becoming only the third movie in Korean history to do so. According to data from the Korean Film Council (KOFIC)’s Korean Box Office Information System (KOBIS), the fantasy epic has welcomed 14.3 million viewers, pushing it past Ode to My Father (2014) to become the third most watched film of all-time, foreign or domestic, at the Korean box office.

It’s anyone’s guess how much higher the film can go, but nearly seven weeks after bowing in theaters, the film is still drawing audiences to the tune of 30,000 during weekdays. With the Lunar New Year approaching, and many Koreans heading to theaters with free time on their hands, its possible that it could break even more records. Roaring Currents (2014) currently holds the all-time box office record for tickets sold with 17.6 million admissions, giving it a commanding lead.

With its big budget, unprecedented scale and heavy use of computer-generated special effects, the project was a big risk that paid off for Lotte Entertainment, becoming the distributor’s first film to attract more than 10 million viewers. While the film is still enjoying a historic run at the domestic box office, Lotte Entertainment is probably also looking to the film’s foreign potential. Before being released in late December of 2017, the distribution rights for the film were pre-sold to more than 100 foreign territories. The blockbuster has already been released in several Asian markets.

Based on the popular webtoon of the same name, the film tells the story of a deceased man who must pass seven trials over 49 days in the afterlife to determine where he will spend eternity. Directed by KIM Yong-hwa, the film stars HA Jung-woo, CHA Tae-hyun, JU Ji-hoon and KIM Hyang-gi.

Along with the Gods: The Two World is the first Korean film in a two-part series. The second installment, Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days, will be released this summer.
