  • JIFF Expands to 5 Jeonju Cinema Projects in 2018
  • by Pierce Conran /  Feb 05, 2018
  • JANG Woo-jin and LIM Tae-gue among New JCP Directors

The Jeonju International Film Festival (JIFF) announced its 2018 Jeonju Cinema Projects last month, which have been expanded this year to include five titles, as opposed to the trios that have been featured in earlier editions. This year’s JCP filmmakers will be the Chilean directors Alejandro Fernández Almendras and Camila José Donosom, and JANG Woo-jin, LIM Tae-gue and LEE Hark-joon from Korea.

JIFF will partly support The Play, the new work by Alejandro Fernández Almendras which is currently shooting in the Czech Republic. One of the director’s past films, To Kill a Man, previously earned the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival. Camila José Donoso, who presented her film Casa Roshell last year in competition in Jeonju, is working on Nona, about a 66-year-old woman who flees to a coastal town in Chile.

JANG Woo-jin, whose debut A Fresh Start screened in the Korean competition in Jeonju in 2014, will helm Winter Night, a nostalgic tale of middle-aged love. LIM Tae-gue, who earned last year’s top prize in JIFF’s Korean competition with his first film The Seeds of Violence (2017), will make Foaming Land, which follows a ship captain back to his hometown upon hearing of his father’s death. Director of social documentaries, such as Heaven's BorderLEE Hark-joon is set to direct Good Business, which will explore the human rights of North Korean defectors.

Since expanding to support feature-length productions in 2014, JIFF has presented highly acclaimed Jeonju Cinema Projects such as PARK Jung-bum’s Alive (2015), SHIN Yeon-shick’s The Avian Kind (2015), KIM Yang-hee’s The Poet and the Boy (2017) and LEE Chang-jae’s hit documentary OUR PRESIDENT (2017) both presented last year.
