  • THE OUTLAWS’ JANG Won-seok Wins Producers Guild of Korea Prize
  • by Pierce Conran /  Jan 04, 2018
  • THE POET AND THE BOY Makers Earn New Producer Awards at PGK Awards

The Producers Guild of Korea (PGK) has awarded its Producer of the Year Award to JANG Won-seok of BA Entertainment, the man behind this year’s runway Chuseok hit THE OUTLAWS. The same award went to TRAIN TO BUSAN’s LEE Dong-ha in 2016. The PGK held its 10th annual awards ceremony on December 14th, also handing out the New Generation Award to The Poet and the Boy line producer LEE Sung-kyung and the New Producer Award to LEE Jung-eun, also behind The Poet and the Boy.

Featuring Don LEE (aka MA Dong-seok) as a gruff detective who goes head to head with YOON Kye-sang as a Chinese-Korean gang leader, THE OUTLAWS marked the debut of director KANG Yun-sung. The film upset the presumed Chuseok heavyweight The Fortress to become the top film of the holiday, welcoming 6.88 million viewers (USD 52.68 million).

Active since the late 1990s, JANG has been behind a number of hits in the last few years, including last year’s Tunnel (2016), A Hard Day (2014), Confession of Murder (2012) and Secret Reunion (2010). In 2017, he released two films besides THE OUTLAWS, the mystery-thriller Forgotten and the period prison trial drama MAN OF WILL. He is currently working on several projects for next year, including Lunar Eclipse, to be directed by SOHN Young-sung and featuring HA Jung-woo.
