  • Korean Actor Up for Prize at Top Japanese Awards Show

Korean actor and filmmaker YANG Ik-june has been nominated for the Best Actor Award at the 72nd Mainichi Film Awards, one of the top film industry awards shows in Japan. He was nominated for his role in the film Wilderness, along with his co-star SUDA Masaki. From director KISHI Yoshiyuki, the film has been nominated in a total of 11 categories.

Wilderness takes place in 2021, after years of mismanagement have turned into Japan into a land of social decay. A man with a speech impediment (played by YANG) and a recently paroled convict sign up for a boxing club at the same time and become friends. The story is based on TERAYANA Shuji’s 1966 novel ‘Ah, Wilderness’.

The five-hour film comprises two parts, each of which received a separate theatrical release in Japan, and had its world premiere at the recent 22nd edition of the Busan International Film Festival

YANG is primarily known as an actor in Korea, with credits that include The King of Pigs (2011), A Quiet Dream (2016), The Poet and the Boy (2017), and an array of independent titles across Asia. He is also an acclaimed filmmaker, having made the well-regarded gangster drama Breathless in 2009. On Sunday, December 24th, YANG debuted a new short called Lalala, which was commissioned for the show All Audiences on the JTBC network.

Held since 1946, the Mainichi Film Awards is sponsored by the Mainichi newspaper and will take place on February 15th next year at the Muza Kawasaki Symphony Hall near Tokyo.
