  • CJ Entertainment Prepares English-Language Remake of Mystery-Thriller

HUH Jung’s hit 2013 mystery-thriller Hide and Seek will be remade in the United States with filmmaker Joel David Moore stepping up to direct the project. Though the original was released by Next Entertainment World, fellow Korean studio CJ Entertainment has optioned the film’s remake rights, adding the project to their growing slate of international foreign-language titles.

Director of the drama Youth in Oregon with Frank Langella and Billy Crudup and the upcoming film Killing Winston Jones with Richard Dreyfus, Moore is also well known as an actor, having appeared in Avatar. He is currently shooting its sequels with director James Cameron.

The first feature film by acclaimed short film director HUH, Hide and Seek was a surprise hit in August 2013, when it welcomed 5.6 million viewers (USD 36.5 million). The film starred SON Hyun-ju who visits a mysterious apartment when his brother goes missing and unwittingly puts his own family in danger. HUH released his follow-up, the horror The Mimic, this past summer.

Moore describes Hide and Seek as “a sharp, sophisticated thriller that created a lasting imprint on me.” He elaborated that “I wanted to explore what could happen if we retold this story to an American audience, using the tools from the original story. We found a rich and complex world, relevant to the current race, class and power struggles we’re seeing here in America. I’m excited to partner with CJ Entertainment, perfect partners on this journey.”

Prior to this version, a Chinese adaptation of Hide and Seek by director LIU Jie was released last year. The film earned USD 10.3 million at the Chinese box office and screened in competition at the inaugural International Film Festival and Awards Macao.

CJ’s CEO JEONG Tae-sung and vice-president Francis CHUNG will produce with Mike IM, also from CJ, executive producing.
