  • Investment and Distribution Company NEW Releases 10 Titles for 2018 Line-up

  • From DOKJEON to PSYCHOKINESIS, Big Titles in Tow



    Renowned Korean investment and distribution company Next Entertainment World (NEW) announced 10 titles they plan to release in 2018. Through a press release, NEW stated they had three films in their catalog that had sold over 10 million tickets since their founding in 2008: The Attorney, Miracle in Cell No.7, and TRAIN TO BUSAN. Next year will be their 10th anniversary. NEW stated, “With the return of directors who will make the nation laugh and cry, the next 12 months will be magnificently entertained with our films.”

    The first film to open up 2018 is Dokjeon, a film by the director of The Silenced, LEE Hae-young, who worked with the production company Yong Film of The Handmaiden. The next is CHO Kyu-jang’s Witness (translated title) which the story follows a man who witnesses a murder at an apartment complex. Ansi Fortress(translated title) is a war blockbuster about the Siege of Ansi, a battle that took place between the castellan YANG Manchun and Emperor Taizong of Tang. 

    YEON Sang-ho, who proved the possibility of successful Korean style zombie film in the Asian market will introduce his newest film, Psychokinesis. Psychokinesis revolves around a group of ordinary people who gain supernatural powers. It stars RYU Seung-ryong, SHIM Eun-kyoung, and JUNG Yu-mi. KIM Sung-hoon’s action blockbuster Rampant (translated title), starring Hyun-bin, is set in a distressed Joseon Dynasty where nocturnal creatures taunt the land. Meanwhile, Director MIN Kyu-dong’s latest film title Her story, will feature renowned actresses KIM Hee-ae and KIM Hae-sook. The film will be based on the true story of the 6-year-long trial that was held against Japan by the victims who were forced to serve as comfort women. 

    Of note will be the return of successful box office directors. After hit films Scandal Makers and Sunny, KANG Hyoung-chul is back with a story about a group of people falling in love with tap dance in 1951, set in Geoje’s prison camp in Swing Kids. Also, Twenty’s director LEE Byoung-heon is returns with Wind Wind Wind (translated title). Lastly, director OH Sung-yoon who directed Korea’s best performing animation to date, Leafie, a Hen Into the Wild, is back with The Underdog with NEW and is waiting to meet his audiences in theaters.
