Horror flick Pengabdi Setan, which was co-produced by CJ Entertainment and Indonesia’s production company Rapi Films, smashed the Indonesian box office after its release on September 28th. Pengabdi Setan is a remake of the 1980 domestic horror film of the same title and revolves around a haunted house. In the film, oldest daughter Rini and her three brothers are left home after their mother dies. When evil spirits come to take a devil’s child, the secret of the family is revealed. The film was helmed by Joko ANWAR, the director of A Copy of My Mind which was also an Indonesian film co-produced by CJ Entertainment. 

According to CJ Entertainment, Pengabdi Setan topped the Indonesian box office for three weeks after its release on September 28th. The company reports that the horror flick has brought in 4.1 million moviegoers as of November 8th, making it the Indonesian box office champ of 2017. It is currently the fourth highest grossing film of all time in the Indonesian box office.  

CJ Entertainment announced that Pengabdi Setan was nominated for awards in 13 categories including Best Picture and Best Director, and won seven awards such as Cinematography, Art Direction, Best Visual Effects, Best Music, Best Sound Design, Best Child Actor and Best Theme Song at this year’s Festival Film Indonesia (FFI). The rights to the film have been sold to 45 countries including Japan, Malaysia and Poland, with future release dates set in some territories.
