  • PSYCHOKINESIS Leads NEW Triple Sale to Netflix
  • by Pierce Conran /  Nov 23, 2017
  • THE CHASE and STEEL RAIN Will Also Bow on the Online Giant in 2018

Through their international sales arm CONTENTS PANDA, Korean studio Next Entertainment World (NEW) has sealed a new deal with global online content provider Netflix that will see its next three major titles made available on the streaming platform in 2018. The agreement includes Psychokinesis, the latest film from TRAIN TO BUSAN director YEON Sang-ho, North Korea-themed action film Steel Rain and the serial killer thriller The Chase.

First up on the domestic release calendar is The Chase, which is slated for release in Korea on November 29th. From KIM Hong-sun, director of Traffickers (2012) and The Con Artists (2014), the film stars BAEK Yoon-sik (Save the Green Planet, 2003) as a landlord who teams up with SUNG Dong-il’s (The Accidental Detective, 2015) investigator to track down a killer targeting elderly citizens.

December 20th will then see the release of Steel Rain, the sophomore work of The Attorney (2013) director YANG Woo-suk. The film stars JUNG Woo-sung (Asura : The City of Madness) as a North Korean agent who teams up with a South Korean intelligence agent played by KWAK Do-won (THE WAILING) to try to prevent a nuclear confrontation between their countries.

Finally, YEON’s Psychokinesis is scheduled for release during next February’s Lunar New Year holiday. RYU Seung-ryong (Roaring Currents, 2014) leads the cast as an ordinary man who suddenly develops superpowers. SHIM Eun-kyoung (Miss Granny, 2014) plays his daughter. The director’s previous work TRAIN TO BUSAN was the top grossing Korean film of last year and became the most successful Korean film of all time overseas, smashing box office records in several markets.

Previously, CONTENTS PANDA also sold Netlfix global rights to their nuclear disaster drama Pandora and sci-fi thriller Lucid Dream.

“We are excited to partner with Next Entertainment World to bring multiple upcoming Korean films including director YEON Sang-Ho’s Psychokinesis to our global members.” said Rob Roy, Vice President of Content Acquisition at Netflix.

“Following Pandora, the recent partnership was made possible as both Netflix and NEW agreed on great content,” said KIM Jae-min, Head of Overseas Sales at CONTENTS PANDA. “We plan to get a head start in the global markets by securing more competitive content in the future.”
