  • AFI Fest to Welcome VIP and Hong Sangsoo Doublebill
  • by Pierce Conran /  Nov 08, 2017
  • CLAIRE’S CAMERA and THE DAY AFTER Head to Los Angeles

The AFI Fest kicks off on November 9th this year in Los Angeles and will welcome a trio of features from Korea. PARK Hoon-jung’s new thriller V.I.P. will be screened there along with two of director Hong Sangsoo’s three films this year, Claire’s Camera and The Day After.

Hong became one of the rare directors to feature two new films at the same Cannes Film Festival when both Claire’s Camera and The Day After were invited there this year. The former was in ‘Special Screenings’ while the latter featured in the competition. Hong also made On the Beach at Night Alone in 2017, which picked up the Best Actress prize at the Berlin International Film Festival for KIM Min-hee, who features in all three titles. Claire’s Camera sees the director reunite with his In Another Country (2012) star Isabelle Huppert. Both titles are invited to the ‘World Cinema’ section.

Featuring KIM Myung-min, JANG Dong-gun, PARK Hee-soon and LEE Jong-suk, V.I.P. is a noir thriller about various governmental agents circling around a cold-blooded North Korean serial killer. The film is director PARK’s fourth, following The Showdown (2011), New World (2013) and The Tiger (2015), as well as the third Korean film to be financed by Warner Brothers. The film is invited as a midnight screening this year in Los Angeles.

The American Film Institute Fest, which takes place at the Chinese and Egyptian Theaters in Hollywood, will run until November 16th.
