Screenings Held at CGV Yeouido from October 27 to 29
In celebration of the 60th year of diplomatic relations between Turkey and Korea, the Turkish Film Festival was held from October 27 to 29 at the
CGV Yeouido. The opening film was a contender for next year’s Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film,
Ayla: The Daughter of War. This film, helmed by director Can Ulkay, is a co-production between Turkey and Korea that was produced to commemorate this year.
Ayla: The Daughter of War is about Sergeant Süleyman, a soldier who participates in the Korean War and finds friendship through an orphaned little girl, Ayla. It’s attracting attention as it highlights the support and friendship shown by Turkey at the time, while getting a glimpse of the impoverished Korean past.
For opening night, actress KO Eun-min who played Lim Dong-mi in the omnibus film Geu-ri-da was hosted. Other opening night attendees included director Can Ulkay of Ayla: The Daughter of War, the original subject of this film, KIM Eun-ja, actress KIM Seol who played Ayla, Ismail Hacioglu who played Süleyman, and the rest of the production team from the film.
During the film festival, you could catch the Turkish action film, The Mountain II (2016), and for a story about people who rely on each other, Love Loves Coincidences (2011) or Whisper If I Forget (2014). For a story about outcasts there was Cold of Kalandar (2015), and Winter Sleep (2014), which were Turkish films that were normally not very accessible in Korea.
