Director
KIM Dae-hwan’s sophomore film
The First Lap has been invited to screen in the ‘Concorso Cineasti del Presente’ (Filmmakers of the Present) Competition at next month’s 70th Locarno International Film Festival in Switzerland. It is the only Korean film that has been invited to Locarno this year.
The First Lap was one of the three Jeonju Cinema Projects that premiered at this spring’s
Jeonju International Film Festival. The project is a road movie that follows an unmarried couple that has been together for six years and faces pressures from their families and an unplanned pregnancy.
The Filmmakers of the Present Competition is reserved for first and second films by emerging global filmmakers. KIM’s film will have its international premiere at the festival and is expected to appear at several more international events in the near future.
Recent Korean films to screen in Locarno include the disaster drama
Tunnel (2016) and
Hong Sangsoo’s
Right Now, Wrong Then, which picked up the Golden Leopard and Best Actor award in 2015, as well as Hong’s
Our Sunhi, which picked up the Best Director Prize in 2013.
