  • SON Hyun-ju Crowned Best Actor at Moscow Film Festival
  • by Pierce Conran /  Jul 06, 2017
  • NETPAC Award for Ordinary Person

Recent Korean investigative drama ORDINARY PERSON has returned home triumphant from the 39th Moscow International Film Festival where it picked up the NETPAC Award for Best Asian Feature, as well as the Best Actor award for its star SON Hyun-ju.

A veteran character actor, SON become one of the top leading men in the country after his starring role in the smash hit Hide and Seek in 2013. He has since led many thrillers, including The Chronicles of Evil (2015) and The Phone (2015).

The second film by director KIM Bong-han, ORDINARY PERSON takes place in 1987, near the end of the rule of former president CHUN Doo-hwan, and focuses on an investigator who begins to question the information he is being fed after the National Intelligence Service handpicks him to lead a serial killer case. The film failed to secure a major audience when it was released in March, accruing just 383,000 admissions.

Korean films have been very successful at the Moscow International Film Festival the past few years. Last year, a pair of Korean films were triumphant, with Jero YUN’s Mrs. B., A North Korean Woman picking up the Best Documentary Award while KIM Jong-kwan’s Worst Woman won the FIRESCI International Critics’ Prize. A year earlier, JIN Mo-young’s My Love, Don't Cross That River earned the Audience Award while Lebanon Emotion picked up the Best Director prize in 2013 for JUNG Young-heon.
